In Conversation with the Artists at the opening of the International Art Textile Biennale 2025 at East Gippsland Art Gallery, Bairnsdale
Antique Japanese hemp, vintage silk thread, salvaged copper wire, found beads

Costly Repairs has many layers of meaning and has been stitched at a time of great change and personal transition.
On the most basic level, it looks at the modern conundrum of repairs. We have a fragment of old, fragile and damaged woven hemp. The silk thread I used was also a vintage remnant, purchased in Kyoto from a roadside stall.
The copper wire has been salvaged from our family manufacturing business. It was taken from machines that are now virtually obsolete and have to be scrapped. The scrap value of these machines is next to nothing, while the copper wiring, due to technological changes, is now very valuable. Ther’s an irony that this tiny element is worth more than the machines which have spent thousands of hours sustaining our livelihood and being part of Australia’s manufacturing history. The conundrum then; why use something so valuable to repair something so old and seemingly worthless?
The process of stitching with this fine wire has necessitated making slow and careful headway and it has been a time of reflection and gentle shifts of consciousness. We are getting ready to move out of that business and into a new phase of life. There will be losses we can’t avoid and some we can’t yet see. Through this transition, however, we have become stronger, carefully shoring up the beautiful life we have, troubles and all, and creating a legacy for the future. The parallel is that we don’t need to ‘fix’ everything, it can’t be done. We can honour the remnants of the past and how they have served us, give new framework to the present and strengthen the future, all with the gentle rhythm of stitching.
This is my personal tribute to resilience and repair and to allowing imperfection and uncertainty some space in my life.
